Geschäftsbericht 22/23: Trotz internationaler Anerkennung, Rückgang der Theaterbesuche führt zu Defizit
At the General Assembly on 23 January 2024, Schauspielhaus Zürich AG published its annual report for the 2022/23 season. In its fourth season under the directorship of Nicolas Stemann and Benjamin von Blomberg, Schauspielhaus Zürich has enjoyed numerous successes on stage, international invitations, awards, and lively work with young people. Nevertheless, the decline in audience numbers and sponsorship income as well as rising energy costs led to a loss of CHF 1.39 million. In order to minimise the impending loss, cost-cutting measures were taken in the first half of the season, including a hiring freeze. Artistic projects were also cancelled and non-essential investments postponed.
Successes in the 22/23 season included the renowned Gertrud-Eysoldt-Ring 2022 being awarded to Alicia Aumüller and Patrycia Ziólkowska for their interplay in Ödipus Tyrann by Nicolas Stemann. The same production was also invited to the 10. Schweizer Theatertreffen and the Lessingtage Thalia at the Theater Hamburg. Wiebke Mollenhauer was named Actress of the Year 2023 for her performance in Gier. In addition, the Schauspielhaus Zürich had a strong international presence, to which Trajal Harrell's Schauspielhaus Zürich Dance Ensemble, founded in January 2023, also contributed. Guest performances and co-productions led to the Papal Palace at the am Festival d’Avignon (The Romeo by Trajal Harrell), the Wiener Festwochen (Pinocchio by Wu Tsang) and the Salzburger Festspielen (Reigen by Yana Ross.
In Zurich, 94,577 spectators attended one of the 477 performances. The figures were therefore below the average figures before the pandemic and well below budget. The family play Pinocchio, directed by Wu Tsang, recorded by far the most admissions. The productions by Nicolas Stemann, Ödipus Tyrann und Sonne, los jetzt! aswell as Ich chan es Zündhölzli azünde von Suna Gürler und Riesenhaft in Mittelerde™. were also successful. The walk-in production, which was created in collaboration with Theater Hora and Helmi Puppentheater, will return to the Schiffbau from 3 to 10 February 2024. Outside Zurich, 42,665 spectators saw a performance, a record in the history of the Schauspielhaus. In addition, 446 school classes attended a performance at the Schauspielhaus and workshops were held with 98 classes.
On the initiative of the artistic directorship of Benjamin von Blomberg and Nicolas Stemann, the sustainability working group was founded in 2019. The first sustainability report outlines measures in the areas of decarbonisation, diversity, equality, inclusion and belonging, sustainable collaboration and promoting young talent. The Schauspielhaus is currently developing a sustainability strategy that pursues the city of Zurich's climate target (net zero 2040) and the goals of the city's 2024-27 cultural mission statement and is intended to help embed sustainability institutionally in its operations in future.
