Alfred Ill is to be done away with. Standing before a tribunal, he fears for his life. As a young man he committed a crime and now, many years later, the plaintiff is demanding justice. She can afford it. Claire Zachanassian returns to the village of Güllen as a woman of the world and offers one billion on the condition that Anton is put to death. When she was young, she experienced first-hand the power of social exclusion when, pregnant out of wedlock, she was expelled from Güllen. That moment was to determine the rest of her life.
How much retribution does the crime warrant? What is the difference between revenge and justice? And how does the victim become the perpetrator? Nicolas Stemann joins forces with two of his long-time collaborators, actors Patrycia Ziółkowska and Sebastian Rudolph, to stage the classic Swiss play.
