“After, from our birth onwards, everybody, and it really is everybody – I mean parents, neighbours, teachers, friends, Youtube tutorials, the looks you get on the street, the looks you get at the swimming pool, the looks you get in general! – has told us again and again how we should behave, how we should look and above all what it is that we should want, now is the point when it simply has to stop. We want to find out at last who we really are. Or want to be. Or even better: who we could be. This is why we’re working on Flex – a magazine in which we’ll shed light on the corners of our brains that are stuffed full of things that we don’t even want. We’re looking forward to getting rid of all the rubbish.” This is what junge theater basel has written about Suna Gürler’s production. And the show’s six actresses, aged between 17 and 23, agree: for Flex, they asked themselves, and numerous girls of similar ages, how far we really have come with women’s self determination, why girls are so often thinking about their figures before jumping into the water in their bikinis on a hot summer day, why male and female stereotypes are so powerful and how long it’s going to be before we can say: feminism has no gender.
