«I'm not very good at analyzing art that moves me. Karim Ainouz's The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmão destroyed me. I could talk about its relevancies to themes and theories related to my own art and interests: ancient tragedy, the soundtrack as wonderment, and/or what writer Alice Walker refers to as ‹in search of our mother's gardens.› Those themes will require years and years for critics and scholars with space and eras longer than myself to fully explicate. For now, I am plainly left with this feeling of destruction. And I must rethink and rebuild my own humanity, step by step, memory and reason. The greatest and most exceptional of art like Mr. Ainouz's film puts our humanity precisely in question through nothing less than a benevolently violent aesthetic inquiry.»
