Pfauen

The Volkstheater am Pfauen was established in 1892 in Zurich-Hottingen, and was used as a music hall for the first few years of its existence. In 1901, with the premiere of a new production of Goethe’s The Accomplices (Die Mitschuldigen) the Pfauen opened as a playhouse under the directorship of the former director of the opera house, Alfred Reucker. The theatre remained private until 1938. It was given a breath of fresh artistic life by the arrival of emigrants from then Nazi Germany, which coincided with the foundation of “Neuen Schauspiel AG”, a theatrical consortium. Under Oskar Wälterlin’s directorship, some of Bertolt Brecht’s most important plays had their world premiere here, and after 1945, numerous dramas by Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt were premiered at the Pfauen. The Pfauen is the Schauspielhaus’ biggest stage, and can accommodate up to 750 audience members. The Schauspielhaus also runs another, small theatre stage in the cellar of the Pfauen: the Kammer. This can accommodate around 70 audience members.
